For my project I wanted to do a survey on stereotypes/ racism, I wanted to see if the forth graders would judge them by their race, to do this I showed a group of forth graders three pictures, one of a white man, a Latino, and a black man, these men were all wearing suits and smiling or grinning. After that I asked a series of questions to the students.
•1: Which one of these men do you think is kind? Why do you think he’s kind?
•2: Which one of these men do you think is mean? Why do you think he is kind?
•3: Who do you think should be president? Why do you think he should be president?
Here are their answers to all three questions.
This is the first kids answers.
1: “I think he (white guy) is the nicest” “because he has the nicest clothes”
2: “I think he (Latino) is the meanest” “because his smile is ugly”
3: “I think that guy (white guy) should be president” “because he looks like he could be a good leader”
This is the second kids answers.
1: “I think he (white guy) is the nicest” “because he has a nice outfit”
2: “This guy (Latino) is the meanest” “because he looks evil”
3: “I think the guy in the middle (black guy) should be president” “because he looks like Barack Obama
This is the third kids answers.
1: “He (black guy) is the nicest” “because his smile looks the nicest”
2: “I think he (Latino) is the meanest” “because he looks like a puppet”
3: “I think this guy (black guy) would make a great president” “because he looks proper”
This is the fourth kids answers.
1: “That guy (white guy) is nice” “because he has the best hair”
2: “He (black guy) is the meanest” “because he has a bad smile”
3: “This guy (white guy) should be president” “because he looks fancy”
This is the fifth kids answers.
1: “That guy (white guy) is the nicest” “because he has good hair and a good smile”
2: “I think that guy (Latino) is the meanest” “because he looks creepy”
3: “I think this guy (white guy) should be president” “because he looks like he has experience”
A paragraph about Outsiders
"The golden rule"
An outsider can be defined as someone who feels left out, like they don’t belong or there not wanted. There are many feelings that may arise as a result of being an outsider such as being sad, lonely and they may feel different. An outsider may feel excluded at school, in games and even at home. Lastly, there are a variety of reasons that may cause one to be an outsider such as race, character qualities, there back around, and there class of society. These are some things that outsiders have to go through every day.
After being introduced to the concept of being an outsider, I am left with many questions. Who makes the rules to “fit in”? Who benefits from the rules? How can the rules be challenged? Are there people who choose to be outsiders? Are there people who are borderliners? Am I an outsider or an insider? How do I treat outsiders? These are questions I should ask myself.
In fact there are different kinds of outsiders such as people who choose to be an outsider and those who don’t choose. There are also insiders and borderliners. I believe I am a insider because I’m always with people and I have lots of friends. Also because I can’t stand being alone, I feel weird and uncomfortable. I think people like to hang out with me because I talk a lot. In all people should treat everybody kind no matter who they are.
Unfortunately stereotypes can cause someone to feel like an outsider. An example of someone who has been stereotyped is my brother. He was playing basketball with his friends and he said “One day I’ll be able to dunk” and his friend said “No you won’t you white” my brother said “What’s that supposed to mean” his friend replied “White boys can’t jump” my brother just laughed and kept on playing. My brother said that made him feel sad and discouraged. People shouldn’t stereotype other people before they know them or know what they can do.
Another example about stereotypes comes from the book “The Outsiders” two character’s from the book discuss stereotypes, Ponyboy, a greaser, states that all Socs are mean, ruthless and violent people like the ones who beat up his friend Jonny Cade when he was younger, and Cherry, a Soc, said that would be like saying all greasers are like Dallas Winston, a greaser who lives for getting in trouble and never likes doing anything the legal way. Both of these statements are stereotypes.
In fact stereotypes are also explored in Adichie’s TED Talk called “A Danger of a Single Story”. In this presentation Adichie states that she thought that all books had to have white people until she found out about African books. Though out Adiches life she was stereotyped in different ways, Adichie also admits that she stereotyped people and places. In the end of Adichie’s speech she states “If we reject stereotypes we regain a kind of paradise.”
Despite stereotypes, epiphanies challenge individuals to become better people. An epiphany is a dramatic change in a person’s personality. An example of someone who had an epiphany is Harry from Spiderman, he hated Spiderman and want to kill him, but later he realizes he was wrong and he saves Spiderman’s life.
At first Harry was a bad, horrible person he wanted to kill Spiderman because he thought he killed his father, but later he realizes he was wrong because his butler tells him that Spiderman did not kill his father, but his father killed himself. In the end Harry becomes good and saves Spiderman’s life.
Other than Harry, Jonny Cade, A Character in my book also has an epiphany. At first he is real jumpy, quiet and scared of everything. Although after he goes to the church he can care for himself and be brave and strong.
All in all learning about outsiders, stereotypes and epiphanies has helped me to grow. One way it’s helped me grow is I no longer judge people by their appearance. Also I know that people can change no matter who they are and where they come from. Lastly I finally know the true meaning of “Treat others the way you want to be treated”, or “The Golden Rule”.
