There are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book, The Giver. Some of these examples are article’s about Edward Snowden, U.S. incarceration rates, Arizona’s banned books, and songs such as Muse. All of these texts have strong evidence of how the giver society parallels the Giver society.
One example is The Edward Snowden situation and articles parallel the Giver society. For example, they both have secrets, like how the N.S.A. kept the secret that they track our phone calls and in The Giver the people don’t know about the memories. Another way they are similar is they both have control like how Jonas cant do certain things and other people cant know things and cant have the memories. My final reason is we have surveillance, like how the government watches us and in The Giver the elders know everything people say and do. This is one way our society parallels the Giver society.
Another example of and article from our media that parallels The Giver is an article about U.S. incarceration rates because it explores control. In the article it says they are trying to control the population and in The Giver they control the population by limiting the amount of kids the have. Also in The Giver they keep the people dumb so they don’t get to smart and in the article the people stay in the prison with no way to educate themselves. The last way is in The Giver the people are prisoners but they don’t know it so they don’t escape and in the article the people are prisoner with no way out. The article and the Giver society are very similar.
Another article that parallels The Giver is the article Arizona’s Banned Books. One example is they don't want them to read books and in The Giver they wont let them read so they don't get smart. Also in The Giver they don't let them learn about other places and they wouldn't let them learn about Mexico. They wouldn't let them be aware or smart so they wouldn't question their society.
The last one was a song, In the song, Muse it parallels The Giver in different ways. For example in Muse they say “push drugs to keep us all dumbed down” and in The Giver they give them drugs so they don't get the stirrings. They also talk about people keeping secrets and in The Giver they don't let people know things like memories and elsewhere. Another way is in The Giver they control people and in the song they talk about control.
All in all our society and The Giver society is the same in three ways control, surveillance and secrets. From this essay I learned that our society isnt so different from The Giver after all.
